Papilio dardanus pupae from Kenya, for sale.

Papilio dardanus, the African swallowtail, mocker swallowtail or flying handkerchief, is a species of butterfly in the family Papilionidae (the swallowtails). This species has a very interesting mimicry and has been intensively studied by geneticists.

Adults will emerge in about 10 days, they need to be fed with a sugary solution. Copula can take place spontaneously if they have enough space to fly. Alternatively, the handpairing technique can be used to obtain fertile eggs. Females lay on Citrus sp. and others, the same plants that can be used to rear caterpillars.
