We offer 3 species of Lepidoptera from Madagascar, which are now available for sale in our store. The stock is composed of one butterfly, a novelty for our store, Pharmacophagus antenor. in addition we have two moths, Argema mittrei, famous Saturniidae species of an astonishing beauty and Bunaea aslauga, another incredible huge moth native to Madagascar.

Pharmacophagus (Papilio) antenor pupae
Pharmacophagus antenor, the Madagascar giant swallowtail, is a butterfly from the family Papilionidae. As the common name implies, it is large (12– to 14-cm wingspan) and endemic to Madagascar. It is the only species in the genus Pharmacophagus.
This is the first time we are able to offer this large Papilionidae species for sale, pupae are fresh and suitable for EU shipping. We recommend to use the express courier option to ensure your pupae will arrive fast and safe to destination, being tracked throughout the journey. Their pupae range between 1,8 grams and 4,5 grams, massive indeed! If you buy from extra-EU, consider that an accidental longer journey could be lethal to these pupae.
Argema mittrei cocoons
Argema mittrei, the Madagascar comet moth is a moth native to the rainforests of Madagascar. They can be found in the residual forests south and east from Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital. It’s one of the world’s largest silk moths, reaching 20+cm wingspan and 20-25g cocoon’s weight. Females have larger body and shorter tails compared to the males.

Bunaea aslauga pupae
Bunaea aslauga pupae for sale. The Madagascar emperor moth is a moth native to the rainforests of Madagascar. The large dults fly during the night and pairing is possible to achieve in captivity, using standard rearing cages. Adults of Bunaea aslauga have a wingspan of 100–150 mm. Pupae need warmth and high humidity to properly emerge, is recommended to lay them on a humid soil. Emergence of this species is quite unpredictable in timing.
There is not much information about the captive rearing of Bunaea aslauga making it a must try for expert breeders and a fascinating one to try for everybody else.

Pupa is the stage in which metamorphosis takes place. Depending on the species, pupae can be nude or protected inside a cocoon. The cocoon is produced by the caterpillar and is not part of the insect’s body. Some species produce a very loose or incomplete cocoon.
Lepidoptera pupae can weight 1 gram or less, while some species, as Argema mittrei, reach up to 15-20g. Pharmacophagus antenor ranges from 1,5 to 5 grams approx.
