Chinese moon moth: what is that?
Chinese moon moth are amazing: everybody knows it! Their colors and shape is one of the most appreciated when dealing with lepidoptera.
Its reclassification underwent a revision, from the original description by the entomologist duo Cajetan and Rudolf Felder in 1862, to the more recent elevation to species by Ylla et al in 2005. Similarly to it’s close relative Actias selene this species is easily reared in captivity.
As a larva it presents itself a fleshy larva with clumps of raised bristles. It develops its pupa in a silken cocoon or in the soil. Turned as an adult, it has a really short lifespan, that can be measured in days, normally from 5 to 7.
As adult, its small head has mouthparts, which have lost their function and are underdeveloped, similarly to all other members of the Saturniidae family. They inability to feed themselves with their mouth makes their lifespan last just days. Another typical issue that one can find in the adults of this specie is the high density of hairs in their bodies.
Their wingspan is subject to a short ranging from 12 centimeters to more or less 15.
