Samia ricini, a member of the Saturniidae family, is the perfect species to start with.
The GHOST mutation is a new Samia ricini mutation that has been selected in our laboratory, obtained from the largest European captive reared Samia ricini line (Samia ricini XXL). The Samia ricini GHOST mutant line has a stricking phenotype: larvae appear more transparent for the possible absence of a larval skin pigment. This unique feature allows internal organs to be seen from the outside, as for example the dorsal heart,. please see pictures. The heartbeat can be clearly observed in larvae of this strain.
Adults are very large and wingspan can reach 16cm, they don’t show any visible differences compared to the XXL line. Their viability is also improved compared to other S. ricini strains.
The Eri silk moth is very easy to rear and breed and produces a quality white silk, that can be valuable for homemade spinning.
